A sprinkling of luck, a passion for what she does and female intuition is the recipe for success for one of fashion industry’s most successful icons. Amanda Wakeley has dressed the late Princess Diana, Angelina Jolie and Scarlet Johansson, amongst many other household names.
So, what a fantastic opportunity to be part of an exclusive group of only 34 female Consultant Surgeons who were part of the senior women in surgery day at her flagship Mayfair store. The décor was elegant (just like its owner) with a sweeping magnificent staircase and parquet floor. There is a warm and inviting feel as you enter the store.
Amanda has a personal connection to the surgical world with 3 generations of the Wakeley household holding Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS). Her grandfather was president of the College and Founder of the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons; the journal I have been Associate Editor of for the past 5 years and am now the Commissioning Editor.
Despite several and very severe setbacks in the past, which include losing her business and name, Amanda Wakeley is a survivor. She has three British Fashion Awards to her name and an OBE, and has re-established herself as a popular fashion designer across all social classes. She candidly told her story and empowered everyone in the room with her energy. Her advice to us was to have tenacity, stamina and a belief in what you are doing.
